Free Website and Hosting and best of all, Google is footing the bill.

Posted by WY on August 27, 2009

No kidding really!

Google’s latest offering allows you to create a website that is hosted at Google for free.

Of course, there are the usual “let us make your life easier” Google features like:

  • Single-click page creation
  • No HTML required
  • Customizable look and feel
  • Cool widgets like latest announcement plug-ins …etc
  • And of course it’s free !!!

Check out what I created for eBusinessToGo.com in less than 30 minutes at the right.
https://sites.google.com/site/ebusinesstogo/

However, we all know there is always a catch whenever you hear the word free.

In this case, they are not so much as a catch but a limitation.

Sites created at Google Sites can only be simple websites.

Sure there are plug-ins like sitemaps, navigation menu, latest announcements that you can add to your website with a simple click but to do any “fancy” features it is basically impossible, particularly for people who aren’t experts.

A second limitation is you can’t use your own domain name you must use a “sites.google.com” domain name.

Wait!

Before you shove this into the “Great idea but useless to me” project pile and move on to your next task.

I urge you to sit down and think who DOMINATES the search landscape now and apparently for years to come.

Yes, Google – the very same company who has generously given us free websites and hosting.

Word on the street is that any site that is created via Google Site will be given a higher SEO ranking than any other site of SIMILAR nature.

So, for 30 minutes of my time, and I can get higher quality traffic to my website, in this case eBusinessToGo.com, without paying a single dime!

Heck, why not!

    Hi Sandi,

Glad you like the information. There is also another tool called Google Notebook http://www.google.com/notebook which works kinda similar.

You can put up pseudo website by adding text, images and links from web pages.

The same principle applies. Once you set your option to make your “NoteBook page” public, Google will be giving higher SEO ranking than any other site of SIMILAR nature.

I have actually seen it happening.

But I have been very cautious in my dealings with Google. Google have no qualms about changing their policy if they feel there are some abuse. So I try not to be too sale-y in the pages I created in case there are some backlash.

Let me know how it turn out for you.

    Cheers,
